Railway Zones in India

Indian Railways operates one of the largest and busiest transportation networks in the world, carrying millions of passengers and tons of freight every single day. To keep such a massive system running smoothly, the entire rail network is divided into administrative regions known as Railway Zones. Each zone functions like an operational hub, taking care of daily train movements, track maintenance, passenger safety, and regional planning under the guidance of the Railway Board.

Originally started with just a few main regions after independence, the system of railway zones has grown steadily to match India’s rapid expansion and modern transportation needs. Today, there are 19 railway zones across the country, including the Kolkata Metro. Each zone is headed by a General Manager and is further split into smaller divisions. This multi-tiered setup ensures that local issues, maintenance needs, and scheduling adjustments can be handled quickly without choking central operations.
